Mary Donnelly

Born in Gozo Malta, migrated to Australia as a child and now reside in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales.

My passion in art was formed at an early age but my formal art education did not begin until 1994 with art studies at the Orange TAFE; this then continued on with full time study for a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Western Sydney in 2003 and a Masters in 2006.

The works primarily draw attention to the everyday, the incidental and often poignant moments that we often miss or overlook in our hectic day to day lives. The main focus of my practice is ‘still life’; still life compositions that convey ‘a sense of place’ in quiet, unassuming ways.  For me, the genre of ‘still life’ allows for a visual means of expression, allows the viewer to enter the painter’s subjectivity, the painter’s conversation with the objects in question.

Painting and Drawing have always been fundamental components of my art practice, as well as, the importance of underlying compositional structures which hold the key to an ongoing dialogue between the artist, the viewer and the work itself. In 2006 I undertook further studies to research the question of ‘time’.  My research questioned whether a moment in time could be represented on a two dimensional art work, or if we only experience the sensation of time passing as we are viewing it. A key issue was to examine if empty visible space within an artwork ‘ignites’ a sense of time.
